Woodside Energy : Browse declared a State Significant Project
Woodside as Operator of the Browse Joint Venture welcomes the Western Australian Government’s decision to grant State Significant Project status to the proposed Browse to North West Shelf Project. The designation reflects the proposed Browse to North West Shelf Project’s strategic importance to Western Australia while providing a framework for enhanced whole-of-government facilitation and support.

State Significant Project status represents the highest level of prioritisation available under the Western Australian Government’s Lead Agency Framework, which is designed to guide proponents through the approvals process. It will support coordinated engagement as the project progresses towards key approvals and development milestones.

The Browse to North West Shelf Project is expected to support reliable domestic gas supply while delivering significant economic benefits for Western Australia.

An independent economic impact assessment indicates the project delivers benefits well beyond the oil and gas sector, and could deliver a long-term uplift of around A$141 billion in gross domestic product nationally and approximately A$56 billion in taxes and royalties, including around A$19.8 billion in petroleum resource rent tax.

As Australia’s largest undeveloped offshore gas resource, the proposed development of the Browse to North West Shelf Project represents a significant opportunity to deliver decades of energy security through domestic gas supply, the potential to support thousands of jobs, and deliver benefits to regional communities in the Pilbara and Kimberley. The project could also grow local business participation and create long-term opportunities for Western Australian industry through procurement and local content.

By processing gas at the existing Karratha Gas Plant, the project would also help secure the ongoing operating future of this important infrastructure and sustain the highly skilled Pilbara workforce that has been built over four decades of reliable operations.

Woodside recognises that whole-of-government coordination is essential to unlock the benefits of the Browse to North West Shelf Project. The company will continue to work closely with Government, industry, Indigenous stakeholders, unions and local communities as the proposal advances through approvals processes and key project milestones.
