- Ukraine’s gas infrastructure is constantly the target of massive attacks
- Uniper donates equipment components to Ukrtransgaz to help maintain gas storage operations
- Intact gas storage facilities in Europe and Ukraine are crucial for energy supply security
The Ukrainian energy sector, including gas infrastructure and storage facilities, is subject to constant and significant attacks by Russia. As part of taking all necessary emergency measures, Ukrtransgaz, the operator of the Ukrainian gas transmission system, turned to Uniper Energy Storage for assistance in providing emergency equipment and spare parts.
Approval to take over the relevant plant parts and components was granted by the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), which, as the EU's central coordination center for civil protection, is responsible for coordinating donations of goods from the private sector to Ukraine. This enabled Uniper's donation to be handed over in Poland in January 2026. The donation consists of several dozen gas fittings, compressed air compressors, and components for gas drying systems and emergency power generators. The transport was carried out using circa 30 trucks with a load of approximately 200 tons, partly as special transports with escort vehicles, to the handover location in Poland, where Uktransgaz took delivery of the plant components. These will now be added to a spare parts depot in Ukraine and will help to maintain the safe operation of gas storage facilities when needed.
Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper:
"Supporting Ukraine is not only a moral obligation for us, but also a clear commitment to European solidarity. With our donation of technical equipment, we want to make a concrete contribution to stabilizing the country's energy infrastructure. Because access to energy is one of the basic human needs – especially where it is anything but a given. This measure underscores our commitment to rebuilding Ukraine's energy supply and our willingness to take responsibility for a secure, stable, and sustainable energy supply in Europe."
Gas storage facilities play a key role in ensuring security of supply throughout Europe. They balance seasonal fluctuations in demand and serve as a strategic buffer to cushion consumption peaks and minimize geopolitical risks.
