Uniper is pleased with the positive assessment of its grant application for the H2Maasvlakte project under the EU Innovation Fund. The financial contribution from this program makes a significant contribution for the realization of Uniper’s 100 MW green hydrogen plant.
The European Commission's Innovation Fund, a subsidy-program with a budget of 3.6 billion euros, aims to bring innovative technologies to the market. The fund received 239 applications and has now selected 41 projects that can look forward to being awarded a grant. Uniper's H2Maasvlakte is one of the projects selected for grant preparation.
The hydrogen production from H2Maasvlakte is intended for the use as feedstock in the chemical industry and refineries as well as for clean mobility. Thus, the hydrogen production will contribute to the decarbonization of the industry.
The European Commission selected Uniper's H2Maasvlakte project proposal because of Uniper's commitment to transforming existing fossil production sites into green energy sites. The European Commission writes: "Noteworthy is the strong commitment of the applicant to convert existing fossil-based power plants to facilitate innovative green energy transition." Also, in its evaluation of H2Maasvlakte, the European Commission states that “the innovation is very strong.”
The H2Maasvlakte project is planned for upscaling from 100MW to 500MW hydrogen production while using existing infrastructure such as electrical grid connection for example.
Currently, Uniper, together with Technip Energies and Plug Power, is in the final stage of a FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) study for H2Maasvlakte. Based on the results from this FEED, Uniper aims to take a financial investment decision (FID) in 2024. By the end of 2026, beginning of 2027, the 100 MW green hydrogen plant could be operational.
Axel Wietfeld, CEO Uniper Hydrogen
"I am pleased that the European Commission recognizes and appreciates the quality of our project proposal. With 100 MW of electrolysis, Uniper can make an important contribution to achieving the climate goals of the Netherlands. I am proud of our team and look forward with confidence to the next milestones on the road to actual realization of our H2Maasvlakte project."„
