Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, also known as Masdar, has initiated a carbon capture and storage project. This sustainable project, in which CO2 will be recovered from flue gases, is the first of its kind in United Arab Emirates. Tebodin, part of Bilfinger Group, has been awarded a detailed engineering contract by Dodsal, the project’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. This contract involves approximately 70,000 man-hours.
The aim of the project is to collect carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Emirates Steel plant before compressing and dehydrating the gas. It will then be transported through pipelines for injection into the Rumaitha onshore field, south of Abu Dhabi city.
The project, will have a threefold benefit: the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the United Arab Emirates, the availability of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and free up natural gas that can be used for domestic purpose.
The facility, which will be able to capture 800,000 tonnes a year of CO2, is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2016. Tebodin’s detailed engineering is scheduled to be completed in August 2014.
