Shell’s Completion of Corrib Field Not End of Story for this Irish Atlantic Margin Play
Shell has recently announced the completion of the Corrib gas development project, in the Slyne-Erris Trough, 70km offshore west of Ireland, but Spectrum’s intriguing evaluation of the region shows that there may still be more to come from this play-type. Corrib is expected to produce 260MMscf of gas per dayIrelandPRmap from Triassic Sherwood fluvial sandstones, sealed by Upper Triassic Mercia Halite evaporites, in an anticline structure.

The Spectrum seismic library provides extensive regional coverage over the Rockall, Slyne-Erris and Southern Porcupine basins, including over the Corrib field. The recent enhancement of many of our 2D seismic datasets has shown significant imaging uplift. These improvements have revealed prospective syn-rift half grabens, large rollover anticline structures and previously unseen stratigraphy beneath the Palaeogene basalts.

Spectrum undertook their regional evaluation based on interpretation of the combined 2D datasets and integrated this with wells, potential field data, and a satellite seep study. Our observations show undrilled analogues of the successful play type exist elsewhere along the margin, along with extensive Cretaceous turbidite fans and Palaeogene channel complexes. With the completion of the Corrib facilities we expect a greater economic feasibility of the identified prospectivity.
