Shale gas in Germany – When opportunity knocks
The German Government will shortly finalise its draft law on hydraulic fracturing on which it has been working for several months. Once finalised, the law will proceed to the Bundestag where it is expected to be voted on in May. The principal change to the draft which was circulated in November last year is expected to be an additional clause concerning hydraulic fracturing in water protection areas.

Spokesperson for Shale Gas Europe, Marcus Pepperell, said: “Shale gas development in Germany holds great potential. It could provide an opportunity to ensure a long-term, domestic and lower-carbon intensive solution to some of Germany’s critical energy challenges. Estimated reserves could provide 20% of Germany’s annual gas demand for up to 100 years. Unless Germany wants to increasingly rely on external sources for its energy supply, it needs to seize this opportunity”
