SBM Offshore awarded a study by Petrobras for FPSO CO2 Carbon Capture Solution
SBM Offshore announced the signature of a study with PETROBRAS for the application of Carbon Capture Modules on FPSOs.

The module design is based on a successful engineering and design study between SBM Offshore and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and qualified by DNV, based on a combination of MHI’s proprietary CO2 capture technology* and SBM Offshore’s industry leading Fast4ward® principles. This compact modular solution allows a significant reduction of the overall emissions associated with the production of oil and gas from FPSOs. The solution is being developed as part of SBM Offshore’s emissionZERO® program.

The scope of the study covers the design and the commercial evaluation of various carbon capture systems configurations to be installed on future FPSOs deployed on Petrobras fields:

   - Various turbine types and machinery set up
   - Various gas flow rates and gas turbine power installed
   - Various CO2 concentrations and gas composition

Olivier Icyk, Chief Business Officer at SBM Offshore commented:

The signature of this study demonstrates the trust that Petrobras has in SBM Offshore as an ocean infrastructure pioneer. We continue to work towards decarbonization solutions in the design of our products and in our offshore operations. Through this study, we will be able to advance the carbon capture module design jointly with our partner MHI for CO2 reduction on future FPSOs.

* The CO2 capture solution will apply MHI’s proprietary “Advanced KM CDR Process™” technology, jointly developed with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.

About Petrobras

Petrobras has upwards of 100 production platforms, 16 refineries, 30,000 kilometers of pipelines and more than 6,000 service stations. Our proved reserves are around 14 billion barrels of oil, a figure expected to double in the next few years. With the discovery of oil and gas in the pre-salt region, Brazil may become the world's fourth biggest oil producer in 2030.

We have built a track record of overcoming challenges since 1953, when the company was created. The main one was developing technology to explore and produce oil in deep and ultra-deep waters, where upwards of 90% of our reserves are nestled. With innovation and daringness, we are now the Brazilian company that makes the applies for the most patents in Brazil and abroad.

Based on this discovery, with a substantial volumetric potential for natural gas, the social/environmental and licensing procedures required to carry the gas to consumer centers will begin.

Petrobras reaffirms its commitment to conducting operations in Colombia, working safely, respecting life, people, and the environment, and acknowledging the importance of talks with the local communities and compliance with the country's legal requirements.
