Saggas loads the first vessel to operate as a floating regasification plant in Germany
   - The Sagunto regasification plant has been in charge of loading the Höegh Esperanza, the vessel that will operate as FRSU in Wilhelmshaven, in the north of the country.

The Saggas regasification plant in Sagunto has loaded 167,000 m3 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) onto the Höegh Esperanza, the first vessel to operate as a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in Germany.

After loading in Sagunto, the Höegh Esperanza has arrived at the port of Wilhelmshaven (Germany), through which the Sagunto terminal is already helping to reinforce the country’s security of energy supply.

As Rosa Nieto, Director of Technical Services at Enagás Transporte and current Chairwoman of Saggas, pointed out, “the operation being carried out in Sagunto is yet another example of the Spanish Gas System’s capacity to contribute to guaranteeing the supply of natural gas to Europe in solidarity”.

Energy supply guarantee

Spain has one of the most diversified energy supplies in the world. Thanks to the six LNG plants in operation in the Gas System (Sagunto, Mugardos, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena and Huelva), natural gas prices in Spain have been among the lowest in the European Union since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

Spanish gas infrastructures continue to operate with 100% availability, which allows Spain’s security of supply to continue to be strengthened for the winter and to contribute to that of other European countries, in an international context marked by the war in Ukraine and market volatility.

About Enagás

Enagás is a TSO (Transmission System Operator) with 50 years of experience in the development, operation and maintenance of energy infrastructures. It has more than 12,000 kilometres of gas pipelines, three strategic storage facilities, eight regasification plants and operates in seven countries: Spain, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Albania, Greece and Italy. In Spain, it is the main natural gas transporter and the Technical Manager of the Gas System.

In accordance with its commitment to the energy transition, Enagás has nnounced that it is bringing forward its goal of becoming carbon neutral to 2040. The company is committed to the development of renewable gases (such as biomethane or green hydrogen), sustainable mobility and energy efficiency, among other areas. The company is a world leader in its sector in the main sustainability indices, as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, is included in the CDP Climate Change A List 2021, and has obtained the highest ESG rating in its sector in the FTSE4Good sustainability index.

About Saggas

Saggas is owned by Enagás Transporte, Osaka Gas UK and Oman Oil Holdings Spain. The plant currently has a storage capacity of 600,000 m3 of LNG in its four tanks and 1,000,000 m3/hour in regasification. This production capacity would make it possible to meet 13% of domestic gas demand in 2023. The Sagunto regasification plant is a key energy infrastructure due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean arc and its proximity to producing countries in Africa and the Middle East.
In addition to energy production, the regasification plant focuses its management on compliance with its zero-accident policy and its commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2009, Saggas became the first regasification plant in Spain to voluntarily adhere to the European Union’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, EMAS, a membership it has maintained uninterrupted to date. The commitment includes submitting environmental and energy management to an audit process on an annual basis, and drawing up an Environmental Statement that is verified by accredited entities.
In addition, Saggas management is certified with international standards such as ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems, ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems, ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, and ISO 50001 for Energy Management Systems.
Each year Saggas verifies its carbon footprint according to ISO 14604 and has registered its annual carbon footprint for the 2013-2020 period with the Spanish Climate Change Office, obtaining the Calculo (I calculate) and Reduzco (I reduce) seals.
