RWE Dea confirmed extension of gas resources in Egypt
RWE Dea Egypt confirmed the extension of the North Sidi Ghazy-1x discovery in the Egyptian Nile Delta with a successful development well. The start of production from the company’s Disouq project is planned for 2013.

The development well NSG-1-2 was drilled in the North Sidi Ghazy structure and reached a total vertical depth of 2,843 metres below the sea surface. The well confirmed the extension of gas resources and Messinian (Abu Madi Formation) reservoir properties on the eastern side of the field.

The North Sidi Ghazy-1x gas discovery forms the core asset of the Disouq Development Project. “I am very delighted with the recent results of this well, which will enable us to develop the entire reservoir,” explained Dirk Warzecha, General Manager RWE Dea Egypt. Together with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and the Suez Oil Company (SUCO), RWE Dea develops in total seven gas discoveries in the first phase of the project. The production is meant to supply gas to the growing Egyptian energy market.

The North Sidi Ghazy-1x gas discovery flowed with a rate of 41 thousand standard cubic metres per hour (about 1 million standard cubic metres per day) on a 50/64 inch choke. The latest well has been temporarily suspended and will be completed as producer, along with other wells, later in 2012.

RWE Dea has now moved the Weatherford 94 rig to the South Sidi Ghazy-1-2 well which will develop the northern extension of the South Sidi Ghazy-1x discovery. The North and South Sidi Ghazy wells together with three North West Khilala wells will be tied back to the North Sidi Ghazy Central Treatment Facilities as part of the first phase of the Disouq Development Project.

The Disouq concession was awarded to RWE Dea in July 2004. The block covers an onshore area of 5,375 square kilometres within the Nile Delta region of Egypt.

RWE Dea Egypt and its predecessor organisation have been operating successfully in Egypt since 1974 and, as operator, can look back on three decades of oil production in the Gulf of Suez. In recent years the company made a number of major gas discoveries in Egypt and boosted its activities considerably with the acquisition of additional concessions. RWE Dea has a total of 12 onshore and offshore concessions in Egypt, across a concession area of about 19,000 square kilometres.
