On May 20, the Queensland Curtis LNG ("QCLNG") plant officially started production after more than four years of development and construction on Curtis Island.
In January 2015, Train 1 delivered its first LNG cargo. So far, totally 16 cargoes have been loaded from Train 1. The project will expand further with the start-up of Train 2 in the third quarter of 2015. At plateau production, QCLNG is expected to have an output of 8.5 million tonnes of LNG a year.
This is the first time for CNOOC to get involved in the whole chain of an overseas LNG project. CNOOC will be supplied with 3.6 mtpa of LNG over a 20 year period. CNOOC Gas and Power Group, a subsidiary of CNOOC, holds 25% equity in the upstream resource and 50% equity in Train 1. CNOOC Energy Technology & Services Limited, another subsidiary of CNOOC, signed an agreement with BG to jointly invest in the construction of 4 LNG ships in China.
The plant is built on a 270 hectare site on Curtis Island, in Queensland, Australia. It is one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects and the world's first project to turn gas from coal seams into LNG.
