Progress made in construction of Finland’s first Skangass LNG terminal celebrated with topping out ceremony
The topping out ceremony of Finland’s first LNG terminal construction project takes place in Tahkoluoto, Pori. The event will be attended by around 100 people working on the project as well as invited guests. The project is due for completion in autumn 2016.

Skangass is investing €81 million on the Pori LNG import terminal in order to strengthen the Finnish LNG infrastructure. Energy support at €23 million was granted for the terminal project by the Finnish Ministry for Employment and the Economy. This support enables Skangass to construct a terminal for the Satakunta region through which environmentally friendly and sulfur-free energy – LNG – will be provided for shipping and Finnish industries currently dependent on fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas.

”The construction work we started in autumn 2014 has progressed on schedule. This is vital for our customers. The invest will provide a boost to the vitality of the Satakunta region. During the entire project the terminal now provides around 250 full-time equivalents of employment and, once completed, 10 people will be employed directly and around 50 people indirectly. Interest in LNG is found in industry, shopping as well as heavy-duty road transport, says Tommy Mattila, Director, Marketing and Sales from Skangass.

”The most challenging phase in the construction project was the building of the 35-m tall concrete wall. Excellent progress has been made in the work, and the weather has also been on our side. We’re particularly happy about there not having been any occupational accidents resulting in days off work in the project. Our ‘safety first’ policy plays a key role in everything we do. Safety regulations are stringent and our goal is zero accidents at work”, says Project Manager Stanislav Lysak from Gasum.

The terminal area will comprise the LNG storage tank (height 35 m, outer diameter 42 m), loading docks, process units, flare torch, three loading docks for road tankers, a transformer building and a heat production unit. Access to natural gas is also an important competitiveness factor for current industrial operators in the area as well as for the Port of Pori.
