PGNiG and ORLEN Upstream continue exploration for natural gas in the region of Wielkopolska
Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) and ORLEN Upstream commenced drilling of another well under their joint project Płotki. Work on the Chwalęcin-1K borehole will take approximately 80 days. In addition, the two companies are getting ready to develop another field.

The Chwalęcin-1K borehole is located within the Śrem-Jarocin licence area, in Zalesie (Jaraczewo municipality, region of Wielkopolska). Ultimately, the borehole is to be 3,040 meters deep. The drilling is expected to discover gas accumulation in the Rotliegend formations.

The work is performed as part of the joint project Płotki, covering four licence areas: Jarocin-Grabina, Kórnik-Środa, Pyzdry, and Śrem-Jarocin. There are seven reservoirs there, producing a total of approximately 2,100 boe per day.

In addition to the drilling work, both companies are currently preparing to develop the Miłosław field, documented in May 2017. The project is to be completed and production is planned to commence between the first and the second quarter of 2019. PGNiG, as the licence operator, holds a 51% interest in the project, while ORLEN Upstream, holding the remaining interest, is a project partner.

“PGNiG and ORLEN Upstream have been involved in joint exploration and production projects for several years now. We are committed to using state-of-the-art, innovative well stimulation techniques, including hydraulic fracturing, in order to increase recovery rates. For the first time in the region of Wielkopolska, we successfully used horizontal technique in sandstone formations, which produced very good results. By working with this proven partner, we can increase Poland’s natural gas production potential and thus enhance its energy security,” said Piotr Woźniak, President of the PGNiG Management Board.

“The area covered by the Płotki project is considered the most promising in Poland in terms of presence of hydrocarbon deposits in the Rotliegend formations. I hope that work performed on the Chwalęcin-1K borehole will deliver positive results and we will soon be able to announce another success of our joint exploratory activity,” said Janusz Radomski, CEO, President of the Management Board of ORLEN Upstream.

Another project where PGNiG and ORLEN Upstream have joined forces is Sieraków, also carried out in the region of Wielkopolska. It covers two licence areas, where preparatory work is currently under way to develop oil and gas fields. Both companies are also running a joint project Bieszczady, comprising seven licence areas in the region of Podkarpacie. At present, interpretation of data collected during seismic surveys is in progress.

PGNiG (Polish Oil and Gas Company) is the leader of the Polish natural gas market. The company’s core business includes exploration and production of natural gas and crude oil. Its subsidiaries import, store, sell and distribute gaseous fuels. They also generate and trade heat and electricity. PGNiG holds stake in 30 companies including entities that provide professional geophysical, drilling and maintenance services. PGNiG holds exploration and production licenses in Norway and in Pakistan. One of its subsidiaries PGNiG Supply & Trading GmbH with a seat in Munich deals with gas trading in Western Europe and established its London international LNG trading office.
