PETRONAS Selects GE Technology for the PETRONAS LNG Train 9 Project
GE Oil & Gas will supply proven, advanced turbocompression technology for the PETRONAS LNG Train 9 project, which will add 3.6 million tons per annum (mtpa) to the existing 25.7 mtpa production capacity of the PETRONAS LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. Train 9 of the PETRONAS LNG Complex will utilize APCI Split MRTM liquefaction process technology. GE Oil & Gas announced its role in the project at the World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Under a contract of approximately $150 million, GE is providing a fully integrated solution for Train 9, including GE Oil & Gas turbocompression equipment and variable speed drive systems from GE’s Power Conversion business. The scope of GE’s supply includes a low/medium-pressure mixed refrigerant package and a propane and high pressure-mixed refrigerant package, each driven by a Frame 7EA gas turbine with a 13-megawatt induction motor running at 3,600 rpm and VSI technology variable speed drive systems. The compression trains are vital elements of the liquefaction process, which cools natural gas to a liquid state.

“The GE technology we are providing for the Train 9 project is well-proven and is used across a wide range of LNG projects, including such landmark projects in the Asia-Pacific region as Gorgon and Ichthys. The Train 9 project also builds on the strong collaboration that exists between PETRONAS and GE and is part of a global frame agreement that has existed between the two companies since 2009,” said Prady Iyyanki, Vice President of GE and President, Turbomachinery business of GE Oil & Gas.

The addition of Train 9 to the Bintulu Complex will increase the flexibility of PETRONAS’ LNG portfolio, while also supporting the overall growth of the region’s natural gas industry. Malaysia is the world’s second largest exporter of LNG.

PETRONAS is an integrated oil and gas company with a significant global presence. Its business activities include harnessing natural gas reserves locally and abroad. The PLC is among the world’s largest integrated LNG production facilities at a single location, consisting of three subsidiaries: Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd, MLNG Dua Sdn Bhd and MLNG Tiga Sdn Bhd. LNG is recognized as an overall beneficial fuel source due to its low carbon footprint and low transportation and storage costs.
