Petredec Limited announced that it has completed its wholly owned LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) storage facility in Mauritius. This is the largest on-land LPG storage facility in the region.
The complex consists of a mounded structure and will allow up to 15,000 metric tonnes of pressurised LPG to be safely stored and distributed. The Port Louis terminal has been designed to industry best practice guidelines and was constructed to ensure a maximum level of security and product safety.
The facility is designed both to supply Mauritius’ gas requirements as well as to function as a re-export hub. The jetty can accommodate the largest LPG carriers ever built, which have a capacity of 84,000 cubic metres. Petredec has 12 such vessels on order.
Giles Fearn, Chief Executive of Petredec, said “We are very pleased to have successfully completed our LPG storage facility in Mauritius. Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean are very important markets for Petredec and this terminal will help us to supply the region even more competitively.”
Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean and since its independence in 1968 has developed from a low-income agricultural economy to a middle-income diversified economy. The country boasts no exploitable energy resources and therefore depends on imported products to meet most of its energy requirements. With this new facility, it not only will have a reliable supply of LPG but also will serve as a supply hub for the region.
An event is scheduled this week to mark the official launch of the terminal. Guests from the private and public sectors will join Petredec for the event.
