Siemens Power Generation (PG) has secured orders for a number of industrial steam and gas turbines. The steam turbines will be used in district heating, power generation and mechanical drive applications in Sweden, India and Egypt. The gas turbines are bound for the oil and gas industry in Ecuador and the Middle East, and designed to drive pumps and compressors.

The first steam turbine is destined for the Johannes district heating plant in northern Sweden. The Front Admission Steam Turbine (FAST) has a 25-MW electrical output and supplies approximately 60 MW of heat. It is a so-called 'tandem turbine' – a special solution for district heating with two parallel steam flows each going to a dedicated condenser. The turbine is scheduled to start commercial operation in the winter of 2005. The Johannes plant operated by the Gävle District Heating Company runs purely on biomass fuel and has received the Swedish 'Green Certificate', an award presented to plants producing electricity from renewable fuels.

A further order was awarded to the Siemens PG subsidiary Demag Delaval Industrial Turbomachinery (DDIT) by JSW Power Limited of India. This order entails a 130-MW ST5 industrial steam turbine including control systems, generator and auxiliary equipment. This turbine, the second DDIT machine ordered by this customer within a year, is scheduled for delivery in August 2005.

Demag Delaval Industrial Turbomachinery has secured two additional industrial steam turbine contracts from Uhde GmbH in Dortmund, for mechanical drive steam turbines for two fertilizer plants in Egypt. The contracts cover the supply of five steam turbines each, which will drive various types of compressors – an air compressor, a syngas compressor, a refrigerant compressor and a CO2-compressor, as well a generator for electric power. The final order comes from the Egyptian Fertilizer Company (EFC) and Alexandria Fertilizer Company (AlexFert), two commercial Egyptian fertilizer production companies. The EFC plant will be located at Ain Sukhna near Suez, and the AlexFert complex will be installed at Abu Qir near Alexandria. The two units are already operating with DDIT steam turbines. The turbines are scheduled to begin commercial operation in late 2006.

Gas Turbines for the Oil and Gas Industry

In terms of gas turbines, OXXO S.A. in Ecuador has placed an order for a 5.25-MW Typhoon gas turbine generating set to be used by Petrolindustrial Filial de PetroEcuador at the Libertad refinery. It will provide additional electrical power required to operate new motor-driven pumps on a subsea pipeline being installed at a loading and unloading terminal for ocean-going tankers. The turbine will operate on liquid fuel and the package will incorporate an outdoor enclosure and off-skid control system. Delivery of the unit to the site is scheduled for December 2004.

Four additional turbines have been ordered for a pipeline upgrade in the Middle East. The Typhoon 4.922 MW (6,600 bhp) gas-turbine-driven pump sets will upgrade an existing crude oil pipeline and are scheduled for delivery by May 2005.
