L'Organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (OPEP) ou en anglais Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) est une organisation intergouvernementale (un cartel) de pays visant à négocier avec les sociétés pétrolières pour tout ce qui touche à la production de pétrole, son prix et les futurs droits de concessions.

L'OPEP est créée le 14 septembre 1960, lors de la Conférence de Bagdad, principalement à l'initiative du Shah d'Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi et du Venezuela pour pallier la baisse du prix du baril (moins de 5 dollars américains à l'époque). À l'origine, seuls cinq pays en étaient membres : l'Arabie saoudite, l'Iran, l'Irak, le Koweït et le Venezuela[2].

Ils furent rejoints par la suite par d'autres pays producteurs:

- le Qatar en 1961
- l'Indonésie en 1962, qui se retire en 2008
- la Libye en 1962
- Abou Dabi en 1967 - qui avec six de ses voisins formera les Émirats arabes unis en 1971
- l'Algérie en 1969
- le Nigeria en 1971
- l'Équateur en 1973, qui se retire en 1992 et y revient en 2007
- le Gabon en 1975, qui se retire en 1996
- l'Angola en 2007

Description (En) : In accordance with its Statute, the mission of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is to coordinate and unify the petroleum policies of its Member Countries and ensure the stabilization of oil markets in order to secure an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consumers, a steady income to producers and a fair return on capital for those investing in the petroleum industry.

OPEC's objective is to co-ordinate and unify petroleum policies among Member Countries, in order to secure fair and stable prices for petroleum producers; an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consuming nations; and a fair return on capital to those investing in the industry.
