Mott MacDonald is providing environmental support to Golar during the installation of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Babitonga Bay, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Once operational, the FSRU will increase energy security in the south of the country.

Capable of distributing 15 million m3 of natural gas per day, the FSRU will provide environmentally sustainable fuel and help meet future energy demand. It will support the development of local industries including ceramics, metal-mechanics and glass, as well as supply local thermoelectric plants.

Mott MacDonald will advise on minimising potential impacts to the surrounding population and environment, such as preserving local mangroves, as well as propose actions to reduce costs and save carbon. The consultancy will also conduct environmental studies, in collaboration with local company OAP, which will be used for the project’s environmental licensing.

Gustavo de la Reza, project manager for Mott MacDonald, said: "The FSRU will have several positive results. As the FSRU is fluctuating, there will be a significant reduction in impacts on local land and biodiversity. It also does not generate noise and fishing and water sports should not be affected, thus offering a minimum of disturbance to the local community. The low impact on the environment and the local population makes the operation highly sustainable at all levels. "

The FSRU is due to become operational in early 2021.
