MAN Award of Contract for World’s First Subsea Compressor Units
Aker Solutions ASA has awarded MAN Diesel & Turbo Schweiz AG the contract for the supply of four compressor units for the Statoil Åsgard subsea compression system. Aker Solutions is Statoil’s main contractor for the project, responsible for the design and construction of the complete subsea system.

This award of contract is a major step in the promotion of subsea gas compression systems within the oil & gas industry and is a confirmation of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s position as market leader in the development of compressors for such systems. The Swiss company MAN Diesel & Turbo Schweiz AG and Statoil have followed a joint subsea compressor qualification programme since 2005.

The MAN Diesel & Turbo scope of work comprises the supply of four (4) hermetically sealed single HOFIM™ compressor units, each with compressor frame size RB 45 with integrated MAN motor, size M43. The contract also encompasses long term field services and life cycle support. Magnetic bearings hold the motor compressor shaft system in position.

The Åsgard field is located at Haltenbanken offshore Norway in water depths varying from 240-310 metres. The Midgard and Mikkel reservoirs contain gas and condensate that are transported through long distance flowlines to the Åsgard B platform.

The overall project will be managed out of Aker Solutions' headquarters in Oslo, Norway. The HOFIM™ units will be manufactured and tested in MAN Diesel & Turbo’s facilities in Zurich, Switzerland; scheduled for delivery in 2012 and are intended for commercial use in 2014.
