Jordan assigned the tender for exploration of oil and gas in Azraq and Sirhan regions to the British SPS Company
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources assigned the tender for exploration of oil and gas in Azraq and Sirhan regions to the British Southern Procurement Services Company, after qualifying according to the Ministry’s standards.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Hala Zwati, said in a press statement on Tuesday that the company will soon enter into the stage of negotiating the terms of the production sharing agreement with the Jordanian government in preparation for the ratification of the agreement by the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly duly.

After the issuance of the law of participation in production officially, the company will start the necessary exploratory studies and will drill exploratory wells and the implementation of seismic surveys in both Azraq and Sirhan area, according to the work plan agreed between the government and the company.

As for the government’s commitments during the exploration phase, Minister Zwati highlighted that the government will not bear any financial burden while the parties are committed to specific production participation rates agreed upon in the commercial oil production phase, which are approved by the government for all oil and gas exploration projects in the Kingdom.

In terms of oil and gas exploration in the Kingdom, Zawati said that by the end of 2017, the Ministry of Energy had announced that it would attract letters of interest to companies interested in exploring oil and gas in six open areas for oil and gas exploration in the Kingdom including North Highlands, Dead Sea, Jafar, West Safawi, Sirhan and Azraq).

In 2018, eligible companies were initially qualified to enter into bids for the exploration of the six zones, which were only submitted by Southern Procurement Services to explore the Azraq and Sirhan areas.

She added that the government had previously contracted with the National Petroleum Company to explore the Eastern Safawi area within the framework of the participation in production, in addition to the company’s work to increase the production of Risha gas field.

Minister Zawati said that the marketing of oil and gas areas in the Kingdom comes within the framework of a package prepared by the Ministry to promote investments in the extraction of oil and gas in Jordan, which was developed marketing packages dedicated to the marketing of open exploration areas.

On the qualification criteria adopted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to qualify the company to which the tender was submitted, the Director of Oil and Shale Oil, Engineer Ghosna Al-Helo, said that the qualification criteria provide mainly for the efficiency of the technical performance, its financial standing, its expertise in the field and its commercial reputation; leading in the Ministry’s approval of the proposed exploration program for the exploratory period in the project.
