Investment decision made for Tornio LNG terminal
Manga Terminal Oy has made an investment decision and will construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal as well as an effective LNG logistics chain at the Port of Röyttä in Tornio, Finland.

As a result of Manga LNG Oy’s subsidiary, Manga Terminal Oy’s, investment decision concerning the Tornio LNG terminal, reception, unloading, and filling stations for LNG ships, vaporization equipment for liquefied natural gas, as well as a 50,000 cubic meter storage tank will be constructed at the Röyttä terminal in Tornio. Manga LNG Oy is owned by the industrial firms Outokumpu and SSAB, the energy companies EPV Energia and Skangass, whose parent company Gasum is also participating in the Tornio terminal’s LNG delivery chain. Manga LNG and Gasum operate jointly in LNG procurements and logistics.

In the autumn, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy granted investment support for the LNG terminal project being planned for the Port of Röyttä in Tornio. After Manga Terminal Oy’s investment decision, the project will progress to the construction stage, and the terminal is expected to be completed in 2018.

“We are extremely satisfied with the investment decision. When completed, the Tornio LNG terminal will provide LNG regionally to meet the needs of industry and maritime traffic in northern Finland and northern Sweden,” says Tommy Mattila, Director, Marketing and Sales at Skangass.

Skangass is actively developing the LNG infrastructure for the Nordic countries. Sweden’s LNG terminal at Lysekil opened in October 2014. Additionally, an LNG terminal under construction at Tahkoluoto in Pori will be completed in 2016.

LNG is an environmentally-friendly fuel that can be used to replace oil-based fuels in industry, energy production, and maritime transport, thus achieving major reductions in the particulate, sulphur, and carbon dioxide emissions resulting from these activities.
