FPSO Cidade de Marica goes into operation in the Santos Basin pre-salt cluster
This February we kicked off operations, in the Lula field Lula Alto area, at the seventh large definitive production system in the Santos Basin pre-salt cluster. Output there is being processed by vessel-platform (FPSO) Cidade de Maricá, which is capable of lifting up to 150,000 barrels of oil and 6 million cubic meters of gas per day. The unit will produce, store, and offload oil anchored at a depth of 2120 meters and at about 270 kilometers from the coast.

With this production system, the pre-salt layer in the Santos and Campos basins already accounts for 35 percent of the Brazilian oil production. Among the companies active in the Brazilian pre-salt, only those members of consortia led by Petrobras have a stake in this production.

The consolidation of the Santos Basin, which accounts for 70 percent of the output coming from the pre-salt layer, has been taking place for a little over five years, with the launch of a large platform there every nine months, on average. Output performance has shown to be among the best in the world, as the first four production systems, deployed between 2010 and 2014, remain producing almost at full capacity (475,000 barrels of oil, via only 19 producing wells), and the three most recent, which are in the production growth phase, also feature the same high performance as compared with the wells already in operation (205,000 barrels per day of oil with only seven producing wells).

Two more large production systems slated to start operating later this year

The first of these large systems to go on stream was the Lula Pilot, in October 2010 (FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis). Then came the Sapinhoá Pilot, in January 2013 (FPSO Cidade de São Paulo); the Lula Nordeste Pilot, in June 2013 (FPSO Cidade de Paraty); Lula/Iracema Sul, in October 2014 (FPSO Cidade de Mangaratiba); Sapinhoá Norte, in November 2014 (FPSO Cidade de Ilhabela); Lula/Iracema Norte, in July 2015 (FPSO Cidade de Itaguaí), and Lula Alto, in February 2016 (FPSO Cidade de Maricá).

Later in 2016, two more major definitive production systems will start operating, the Lula Central project (FPSO Cidade de Saquarema), and the Lapa project (FPSO Cidade de Caraguatatuba).

This significant progress made in the design and construction of wells, subsea systems, and platforms has been accompanied by a major effort in deploying a complex gas offloading and processing infrastructure.

Start of operations at the Route 2 gas pipeline

Thus, continuing with the enhancement of the Santos Basin's productive capacity, on Friday, Feb. 12, we started operations at the second offloading route for the natural gas produced in the pre-salt layer of this basin through a gas pipeline called Route 2. Ranging over a total distance of 401 km, Route 2 is the longest submarine pipeline in operation in Brazil and can transport 13 million cubic meters of gas per day, connecting the pre-salt Santos Basin production systems to the Cabiúnas Gas Treatment Terminal, in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, which had its processing capacity boosted to 28.4 million cubic meters per day in order to receive gas coming from the Santos Basin pre-salt region and also from the Campos Basin.

The Route 2 pipeline will interconnect with the Route 1 pipeline, which has been in operation since 2011 and is capable of offloading another 10 million cubic meters of gas. Measuring 359 kilometers in length, and fitted with sections of 18 and 34 inches in diameter, Route 1 consists of two parts: The Lula-Mexilhão Platform section, and the section connecting the Mexilhão Platform to the Monteiro Lobato Gas Treatment Unit (UTGCA), in Caraguatatuba, São Paulo, which, in 2014, had its processing capacity adjusted to receive up to 10 million cubic meters of gas produced in the Santos Basin pre-salt area daily.

With this new pipeline, the total installed natural gas offloading capacity at the Santos Basin pre-salt region adds up to 23 million cubic meters, which will ensure the growth in our oil output and the expansion of the domestic gas supply to the Brazilian market, decisively contributing to consolidate our strategy of increasing the share of natural gas in our business.

The Lula Alto and Lula Central areas, in addition to the Lula Nordeste-Cernambi and Lula/Mexilhão Platform pipelines, are owned by the BM-S-11 Consortium, operated by Petrobras (65%) in partnership with BG E&P Brasil Ltda. - a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (25%) and Petrogal Brasil S.A. (10%).

The Sapinhoá and Lapa fields are located in concession BM-S-9, operated by Petrobras (45%), in partnership with BG E&P Brasil Ltda. - a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (30%) and Repsol Sinopec Brasil S.A. ( 25%).

The Cernabi-Tecab gas pipeline belongs to the Cabiúnas 1 Consortium, operated by Petrobras (55%), in partnership with BG E&P Brasil Ltda. - a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (25%) and RepsolSinopec Brasil S.A. (10%).

About Petrobras

We have upwards of 100 production platforms, 16 refineries, 30,000 kilometers of pipelines and more than 6,000 service stations. Our proved reserves are around 14 billion barrels of oil, a figure expected to double in the next few years. With the discovery of oil and gas in the pre-salt region, Brazil may become the world's fourth biggest oil producer in 2030.

We have built a track record of overcoming challenges since 1953, when the company was created. The main one was developing technology to explore and produce oil in deep and ultra-deep waters, where upwards of 90% of our reserves are nestled. With innovation and daringness, we are now the Brazilian company that makes the applies for the most patents in Brazil and abroad.
