Fourth LNG tank at Gate terminal ready: strengthening energy supply for the Netherlands and Northwest Europe
The construction of the fourth LNG storage tank at Gate terminal on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam has been completed as scheduled. As of 1 October, the new tank will be commissioned after a construction period of three years. With this expansion, Gate increases its storage and regasification capacity, strengthening the terminal's role in the energy supply and security of supply for the Netherlands and Northwest Europe.

The new tank has a storage capacity of 180,000 cubic meters of LNG. Partly as a response to the 2022 energy crisis, the decision was made to build an additional tank. The expansion adds 4 billion cubic meters of regasification capacity per year, bringing Gate's total capacity to 20 billion cubic meters per year. By comparison, the total Dutch gas market has a volume of approximately 30 billion cubic meters per year.

Important Milestone

Jarmo Stoopman, Managing Director at Gate terminal: 'With the commissioning of this fourth tank, we achieve an important milestone. Gate is expanding its capacity and strengthening its role as a strategic gateway for the energy supply of the Netherlands and Northwest Europe. The ability to supply LNG from various parts of the world helps Europe further diversify its energy supply and enhances security of supply.'

Further expansion Jetty 4 and 5

Following a final investment decision in January 2026, the construction of Jetty 4 by the Port of Rotterdam is well underway. This jetty is expected to start small-scale ship loading and bunkering operations by the end of 2028. To facilitate further growth and the rising demand for cleaner marine fuels, Gate terminal also launched an unbinding 'Expression of Interest' on 31 August 2026, allowing market parties to show their interest in future loading capacity for the intended Jetty 5.

Strategic gateway for LNG

Gate is a joint venture between Gasunie and Vopak. The terminal receives LNG by ship, stores it temporarily in liquid form, and then makes it suitable for delivery via the gas transmission network to users in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. The expansion increases the capacity to supply LNG from different parts of the world.

About Gate terminal

Gate terminal B.V. is a 50/50 joint venture between N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie and Koninklijke Vopak N.V. The terminal has been operational since September 2011. The imported LNG is unloaded at the terminal, stored and evaporated to natural gas before it is delivered to the transmission network for the European markets. Gate terminal also offers a portfolio of other services including backloading services for LNG vessels, ranging from small bunker vessels to large LNG carriers, and loading of LNG tank trucks and containers.Once all envisaged projects at Gate terminal have been completed, the terminal will have a total regas capacity of 20 billion cubic meters per year.
