Finland’s first LNG import terminal opened – provides access to LNG deliveries also outside the gas pipeline network
Finland’s first LNG import terminal was opened in Pori on Monday September 12, 2016. Deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to customers also begin on the same day. The terminal enables LNG deliveries also to industrial, maritime and heavy-duty road transport customers outside the gas pipeline network and diversifies the Finnish energy market.

Access to LNG in Finland will improve considerably following the opening of the terminal. This is an important competitiveness factor for the M20 Industrial Park at the Port of Pori as well as current industrial operators in the area, of which the energy company Huntsman Pigments and Additives Oy, Kemira Oyj, Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy and Porin Prosessivoima have already switched to LNG.

Nordic gas ecosystem strengthened by Pori terminal

The opening of the Pori LNG terminal will develop and diversify the Finnish energy market. The option of LNG deliveries outside the gas pipeline network lowers the threshold for the utilization of gas throughout the country. It’s great that the terminal is now opened on schedule and without any accidents resulting in absence from work, says Johanna Lamminen, Chair of the Skangas Board of Directors and CEO of Gasum.

The project’s total investment exceeds over €80 million. In 2014 energy support at €23 million was granted for the terminal project by the Finnish Ministry for Employment and the Economy. When operational, the terminal provides direct employment to 10 and significant indirect employment to around 50 persons. The terminal project has provided 320 full-time equivalents of employment and at best the total number of people working on the construction site at the same time has been 230.

This year has been important for the LNG offering as in August Finland’s first gas filling station aimed at heavy-duty vehicles was opened at the Vuosaari Harbor in Helsinki. Progress in the construction of the Tornio Manga LNG joint project is also being made as planned, and the terminal will be completed in Tornio in 2018.

The Gasum subsidiary and terminal operator Skangas supplied a total of 376,700 tonnes (5.2 TWh) of LNG in Finland, Sweden and Norway in 2015. In addition to the Pori terminal now opened, Skangas has LNG production plants and terminals in Risavika, Norway, and Porvoo, Finland, and LNG terminals in Øra, Norway, and Lysekil, Sweden.

LNG meets the requirements set by the Sulphur Directive regulating shipping emissions as well as the stricter emission limits to be applied in the future. It can also be used to replace the use of petroleum-based fuels in industry, energy production and heavy-duty road transport. Replacing oil with LNG results in significant cuts in the particulate, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from these activities. The use of LNG also enables a switch to liquefied biogas (LBG) without any additional investments.

About Gasum

The energy company Gasum is a Finnish gas sector (natural gas and biogas) expert that is building a bridge to a carbon-neutral society on land and at sea. Gasum contributes to the creation of a sustainable energy economy by increasing the supply of Finnish biogas, developing the Nordic gas ecosystem and ensuring the price competitiveness of gas.
Gasum imports natural gas to Finland, upgrades biogas and transmits and delivers these for a broad range of uses in energy production, industry, homes, and land and maritime transport. Gasum is the leading supplier of biogas in Finland.
Gasum processes waste and produces biogas at seven biogas plants located in Honkajoki, Huittinen, Kuopio, Oulu, Riihimäki, Turku and Vehmaa.
It injects biogas into the gas network from Espoo, Kouvola, Lahti and Riihimäki. The Gasum subsidiary Skangas is a Nordic expert in liquefied natural gas (LNG) that will continue to strengthen the position and infrastructure of LNG and the utilization of new gas solutions more extensively in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Skangas has LNG production plants in Risavika, Norway, and Porvoo, Finland, and LNG terminals in Øra, Norway, Lysekil, Sweden, and Pori, Finland.
The Gasum Group has around 300 employees in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Gasum Group’s revenue totaled €915 million in 2015.
