Exxon and Total Join Forces to Drill Uruguay’s 1st Offshore Record-Breaking Deep Water Well
ExxonMobil has acquired 35% stake in an oil block off Uruguay’s coast, teaming up with France’s Total to spud the country’s first offshore exploratory well. According to ANCAP, the well will be drilled about 400 km from the seaside capital Montevideo at a depth of 3,400 m.

Using Spectrum’s extensive Atlantic Conjugate Margin 2D seismic database, we have identified a “Titan class” deep water apron fan play characterized by landward dipping beds, a geometry inferred to result from plate scale loading and isostatic processes. This play is typically masked in time seismic sections but soon revealed in water depth compensated seismic sections.

It is believed to be present on both sides of the margin and has been identified on various datasets in different basins. The first time it was identified by Spectrum was when the Deep Water Recon survey was acquired offshore Uruguay in 2013.

Using this data, a huge apron basin floor fan was mapped and named “Supermassivo” to reflect its size and geographical location. With source rock inferred from the conjugate margin, a thick sediment overburden, a landward dipping geometry of the basin floor fan section as seen on PSDM seismic sections and a huge area which actually increases in depth, this well could be one of the major exploration breakthroughs this century as predicted by studies carried out on Spectrum seismic on both sides of the Atlantic margin.
