Endesa Europa has secured the international tender to become advisor to the National Electricity Office of Morocco (ONE for its initials in French) on the creation of its trading business, ONE-Trading, in order to enable it to better manage risks related to volatility in currencies, raw materials and energy.

A team from ENDESA will be responsible for determining the technical and functional organisation of the trading room and for assisting ONE personnel in acquiring the know-how necessary to master the various management issues related to energy and risk management, strategy organisation, analysis and structuring, administration and IT.

To this end, joint teams will be set up and will meet periodically in various locations (Casablanca, Madrid and Paris). This work method will facilitate ongoing training in technical and operational aspects. Further, the ONE technical team will be closely involved in the definition of key variables.

ENDESA has a significant track record in this area through Endesa Trading, which operates in the European wholesale markets to manage its generation and supply activities outside of Spain and Portugal. Among other targets, this line of business gives it the necessary power supply to meet its contracts with European customers and balance out risk positions in its operating markets.

ENDESA also participates in capacity auctions run by various European grids and in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

In 2006, Endesa Trading handled a total of 46,120 GWh of energy, of which 11,780 GWh corresponded to operations with Italian customers and 5,520 GWh corresponded to Snet. The remainder related to direct supply contracts with large industrial consumers, distributors and other agents, and to import and export operations at the interconnections between Spain, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Italy and Slovenia.

It is worth highlighting the energy obtained by Endesa Trading in the virtual capacity auctions (VPPs) organised in France by Electricité de France (EdF) (2,600 GWh to be supplied between 2006 and 2008) and by Dong of Denmark (810 GWh in 2006).

In addition to this advisory contract, ENDESA is present in Morocco through its stake in the 384 MW Tahaddart CCGT, which supplies 17% of the country’s energy.
