Conventional demand in private households, businesses and industry totalled 237 TWh in 2024, with the increase largely due to a 4.2% rise in industrial consumption, which reached 176.7 TWh.
In 2024, total natural gas consumption amounted to 311.7 TWh, a decrease of 4.2% compared to the previous year, which is due to lower gas demand for power generation. Specifically, gas demand for electricity generation stood at 74.7 TWh, a 22.0% decrease.
Security of supply
Spain contributed to the security of supply of the rest of Europe by supplying a total of 34.5 TWh of natural gas, both through interconnections and liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship loading. The loading operations complied with the European Union’s 14th package of sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, with Spain being the first EU country to define the detailed rules and procedures for the monitoring, control and authorisation of ship loadings carried out in the Spanish Gas System in order to ensure that the loaded LNG does not originate from Russia.
In 2024, the Spanish Gas System received gas from 14 different origins, contributing to a broad diversification of supply and positioning Spain as a strategic entry point for liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Europe. Likewise, terminals carried out more than twice as many LNG bunkering loadings in 2024 (3.8 TWh) than in 2023 (1.5 TWh), thus contributing to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
Natural gas fill levels in underground storage facilities ended the year above 80% - after reaching 100% filling in August.
In a European energy environment marked by the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the Spanish gas system has operated 24 hours a day, every day of the year with 100% availability, demonstrating great robustness and flexibility.

Enagás is a Transmission System Operator (TSO) with 50 years’ experience in the development, operation and maintenance of energy infrastructure. The company has approximately 12,000 kilometres of gas pipelines, three underground storage facilities and eight regasification plants. The company operates in seven countries. In Spain, it is the Technical Manager of the Gas System and has been appointed Interim Manager of the Hydrogen Transmission Network (HTNO) by Royal Decree Law 8/2023. By agreement with the Council of Ministers, Enagás has been entrusted with the development of H2med, the Spanish hydrogen network and associated storage facilities. In line with its commitment to energy transition, Enagás has announced its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, with a firm commitment to decarbonisation and the promotion of renewable gases, especially hydrogen.
