E.ON starts work on new-build power project in Russia
EUR800 million investment in efficient gas units

E.ON has started work on the construction of two new combined-cycle gas turbine units at its Surgutskaya GRES-2 power plant in Siberia. The two units will add 800 MW to the existing power plant, taking its total capacity to 5,600 MW.

The new highly-efficient gas turbines will become operational in December 2010, making the Surgutskaya thermal plant one of the highest capacity power stations in the world. E.ON will invest approximately EUR800 million in the project. This will form part of E.ON’s approximately EUR2 billion Russian investment program, which aims to expand power capacity from 8,630 MW to 11,030 MW by the end of 2011.

The Surgutskaya GRES-2 power station is situated in the Tyumen region of Russia. With a capacity of 4,800MW, the plant provides electricity for around 40% of the region’s population. With consumption expected to grow over the next years, the new power plant will use the latest gas turbine technology to efficiently boost power production in Russia.

Surgutskaya GRES-2, Shaturskaya GRES, Berezovskaya GRES, Smolenskaya GRES and Yayvinskaya GRES power plants are subsidiaries of OAO OGK-4. E.ON acquired a majority stake (76.09%) in OAO OKG-4 in 2007. The business runs a fleet of comparatively modern and efficient power stations in the Russian regions Urals, Western Siberia, Volga, and Central Russia.
