E.ON selects AREVA and Siemens as partners for nuclear power projects
E.ON, AREVA and Siemens today signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) concerning cooperation on the construction of new nuclear power stations and the further development of nuclear power technology. The companies are thus clearly affirming their conviction that carbonfree electricity generation will play a growing role in a balanced energy mix.

The LoI envisages cooperation on the construction of E.ON’s new nuclear power stations in the UK. In this framework, E.ON is to select the 1,600 MW advanced pressurised-water reactor EPR of AREVA and the conventional island of Siemens to construct new nuclear power stations in the UK.

E.ON also agreed to collaborate on developing further the AREVA’s SWR 1000 (provisional name), cutting-edge boiling-water reactor in the range of 1,250 MW. Together with the EPR, this reactor is currently regarded as offering maximum safety for the use of nuclear power. E.ON aims to use this model above all for its new power stations with an electricity-generating capacity in the intermediate capacity range. E.ON will work with Siemens on the conventional island of this reactor.

The EPR and the SWR 1000 boiling-water reactor are the latest development in the European nuclear technology. With this cooperation E.ON thus gets access to this cutting edge technology, which sets new benchmarks regarding security and reliability. Moreover the early establishment of a cooperation between manufacturer and operator assures access to components in due time.

The three companies also intend to collaborate on research and development. Part of this Cooperation is the mutual exchange of experts to ensure that the common development work is as efficient as possible. In addition, E.ON and AREVA are entering into a long-term partnership in service and maintenance for existing and new nuclear power stations.
