The pipeline will export excess produced gas to the Tern - North Cormorant gas pipeline and import gas for lift gas and fuel when required.

The 11 kilometre long, six inch pipeline was fabricated and inspected at Subsea 7’s spoolbase in Leith and installed using the Seven Navica vessel. It is the first pipeline to be installed from the recently refurbished facility.

Hugh McClure, director of capital development projects, said: "We are pleased to have completed the first part of the 2014 offshore subsea campaign safely, successfully and on schedule. This is another important milestone achievement for the Western Isles Development Project."

About the Western Isles Project

The Western Isles Project (Dana 77% and CIECO 23%) will develop two oil fields called Harris and Barra in the Northern North Sea, 160km east of the Shetlands and 12km west of Tern field. It involves a subsea development of at least five production and four water injection wells tied back to a new build floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) with oil export using shuttle tankers.

Following the FPSO keel laying ceremony in May 2013, top hole drilling began on the North Drill Centre in August 2013 and was completed within 67 days using the Ocean Nomad semisubmersible rig, leased from Diamond Offshore. A total of four subsea trees have now been successfully installed on the seabed. The gas export pipeline was installed in May 2014 with FPSO installation at a later date.
