Recently, the annual output of the Gulong shale oil demonstration area in Daqing, operated by CNPCCNPC, has exceeded one million tons, marking its entry into large-scale and commercial production.
The Gulong reservoir represents a classic example of lacustrine argillaceous-laminated shale oil, characterized by a nanopore-dominated structure presenting significant development challenges. To overcome these, Daqing Oilfield has pursued sustained technological innovation, pioneering a development theory centered on in-situ enrichment of lacustrine shale oil through multi-phase, multi-field and multi-scale approaches and achieving breakthroughs in five key technologies, which laid a solid foundation for large-scale development.
Oil was first discovered at Well GYYP-1 in 2020. The following year, key exploration wells including GYYP-1 and GY-2HC achieved high yields, contributing to an annual output of 15,000 tons. Large-scale pilot production began in 2022. Output surged to over 170,000 tons in 2023. A significant milestone was reached in 2024, with the maximum single-well daily production hitting 102.0 cubic meters. Since the beginning of 2025, annual shale oil production has exceeded one million tons, demonstrating consecutive annual doubling and rapid production ramp-up.
