Atkins engineers celebrate successful installation of subsea storage tank
The Atkins oil and gas team is celebrating the installation of the subsea oil storage tank on the 40 million barrel Solan field west of Shetland, in the UK. Atkins designed the innovative subsea tank with a number of operational features that are true industry firsts.

Atkins completed work for client Premier Oil earlier in 2014, after more than five years as engineering contractor providing technical support for the project.

Beginning in 2008, the highly skilled group of engineers in the Atkins oil and gas team have been involved in each step of the Solan project from concept development work, through to Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and then detailed design work in 2012-2013.

Ed Randall, project manager and principal naval architect at Atkins, said: “The Solan project has been an integral part of our strategy to deliver green and brownfield design services to clients in addition to operational support. Design is an area that we are continuing to invest in, and the innovative solution that we have provided to Premier and Chrysaor for the Solan field demonstrates the technical expertise of the team that has been working on the project over the last few years.”

Fabricated at Dry Docks World Dubai to designs from the oil and gas team in London, the subsea tank sits in around 135m of water and can store 300,000 boe; it is 25m high and has a foot print of 45m x 45m.

Atkins’ oil and gas business has recently signed a five-year contract for the provision of structural integrity management services under a new framework agreement with oil and gas operator, Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited, as well as an engineering support agreement with Maersk for three North Sea assets and a two-year framework agreement with ENI for assets in Western Australia.
