ABB wins marine orders worth USD75 million for LNG ships
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders worth a total of $75 million to supply propulsion, power-generation and power-distribution systems for several new vessels to be built in South Korea.

ABB’s delivery will help the ships maximize their fuel efficiency, as well as provide a reliable power supply to improve the availability of onboard equipment. The vessels will process and transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) extracted from subsea and onshore reserves.

“Demand for energy continues to drive growth in the marine construction sector for LNG processing and transportation,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “ABB’s ability to deliver reliable and energy-efficient equipment for LNG ships helps operators to meet the needs of their own end customers.”

The new projects include:
- Electric propulsion units, generators, frequency converters and other electrical equipment for the world’s first floating natural gas liquefaction vessels, to be built for FLEX LNG by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. These vessels will be used for the extraction, liquefaction and transport of natural gas from previously inaccessible subsea reserves.

- Complete electrical propulsion and onboard power systems for several new transport vessels for Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd, to be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea. The vessels will transport LNG from Brunei to Japan.

Scheduled commissioning and delivery of these vessels ranges from 2010 to 2012.
