OMV Petrom installed photovoltaic panels at 40 filling stations in Romania to supply them with renewable energy for part of their electricity needs. The photovoltaic (PV) panels produce more than 30,000 kWh of solar energy per year in each filling station, which is the equivalent of an annual average consumption for eight Romanian households per year.
Thanks to the energy produced by the photovoltaic panels, each filling station will contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint by 8.3 t of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year. The reduction of carbon emissions in the 40 filling stations is equivalent to recycling 2.8 t of waste rather than landfilling. OMV has also already installed PV plants in some filling stations in Slovakia and Hungary. With these measures, OMV contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy- and SDG 13 - Climate Action.
OMV reduces the emissions from operations through both conventional ways of reducing CO2 (i.e. energy efficiency, equipment and process improvements) as well as developing ways to power the operations with renewable energy. All greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction projects implemented in OMV operations between 2009 and 2019 have delivered a total reduction of 1.8 mn t CO2 equivalent to date. In addition to powering filling stations with solar enegery, OMV will build Austria's largest ground-mounted solar park at OMV sites in Lower Austria in cooperation with Verbund, which will have a capacity to save approx. 12,000 t of CO2 per year.
