A significant development for the smooth implementation of the projects for the 2nd Upgrade of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Station in Revythoussa is the issuance, on July 16, 2014, of the Construction Approval of the 3rd Tank. The construction of the 3rd tank is part of the project for the 2nd Upgrade of the LNG Station on Revythoussa, a project that its total budget amounts to 156.28 million euros.

DESFA's Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Konstantinos Ksifaras, highlighted that "The issuance of the Construction Approval for the 3rd Tank coincides with a very critical period for the European energy security supply. The unhindered implementation of the project for the 2nd Upgrade of Revythoussa, which is expected to be completed within 2016 and is going to increase the facility’s storage capacity by 73%, will, also, allow the import of LNG from more Users and will contribute to the increase of the LNG storage period within the facility for more than 18 days that is valid today, has been safeguarded".

The project for the 2nd Upgrade of the LNG Station in Revythoussa includes, also:
- The increase by 40% of the Station's gasification rate.
- The upgrade of the port facilities that will enable the berth of bigger vessels up to και 260.000m3.
- The upgrade of the Metering Station in the entry point of Aghia Triada.

For the implementation of the project, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has already authorized the grant of an 80 million euros loan, while with the completion of the project supply security will be strengthened and the ability for more NNGS Users to import LNG will be enabled.

The National Natural Gas System Operator (DESFA) S.A. was established on 30th of March 2007, following the provisions of law 3428/2005 on liberalization of the natural gas market. The above mentioned law aimed in the harmonization of Greek legislation with Directive 2003/55/EC. With this law DESFA was established as a subsidiary company of DEPA S.A. Also the Board of Directors of DESFA should be appointed and revoked by a joint decision of the Ministers of Economy & Finance and Development for a time period of 10 years from the establishment of DESFA.
